Interactive WhiteBoard activities (groupwork)

EMOTIONS

We have chosen this topic, because, as Sílvia Palou Vincens[i] says (2004), Feelings and emotional education are very important, so we need to work with them in every subject.
The following 5 activities, which are directed to 2nd primary, have the aim of working moods’ vocabulary (happy, sad, angry, tired, surprised, worried and scared) in an interactive whiteboard (IWB) using different tools and materials, while emotional skills are being worked through daily life situations.

1st activity:
This activity sets the starting point and it consists on a story about feelings. The objective is to present the different moods we want to work with our students, so we thought that a story would be entertaining and very useful. Besides, as it is a repetitive-structure story, children can understand it easily and they or the teacher can read it.
We created the story using StoryJumper, due to the fact that it provides the possibility to show the pictures and text we decide on the IWB, so that every child is able to see and take part in the story.

2nd activity:
This is a matching activity. On the one side, there are some words and on the other side, there are some images. With the help of the Interactive Whiteboard, children have to match each word with the corresponding image. The main idea is to keep learning some vocabulary within a different way of acting.
To make this activity, we have used HotPotatoes programme. This is a very useful programme to make different activities by yourself: Matching activities, quizzes and so on.

3rd activity:
This is a listening activity. With this activity the students will interact with the whiteboard and at the same time practice listening skills. It is a very simple activity. The student will see two faces that show different emotions. An audio will say an emotion and the student has to round up the correct one in the whiteboard.
For this activity we use two different programmes. On the one hand we have used the whiteboard programme. We have put two different faces in each slide. And on the other hand we have used the computer audio to record and for the listening.

4th activity:
This is a guessing activity. After doing the first three activities and having learnt the vocabulary in emotions, with this activity students have to guess which emotion shows the board. The objective of this activity is to revise all the words in that topic.
For this activity we’ve used the interactive whiteboard. We put all the different faces in a page and cover all the faces. Then, we will slide the page little by little showing the faces one by one so that the students have to discover what emotion is.

5th activity:
The main aim of this activity is to put into practice the vocabulary learned before. It is going to be worked by using emotions flashcards and the whiteboard. The students will participate in the activity one by one. One pupil will take one flashcard in which is written one emotion. Then, he will try to draw the emotion in the whiteboard. The rest of the students will have to guess which emotion is being drawn. The one who guesses right will be the next taking another flashcard.
In this activity, there are needed two different programmes. The first is Microsoft Word to create the flashcards. The second is the whiteboard programme, it lets us use different colours and patterns to draw the faces.
